About BAP:
BAP is delivering the products and services to rural farmers to unlock potentials and propel communities forward. To catalyze farmers to realize their potential BAP offers asset financing directly to the BoP. Our first product, a bicycle, connects farmers to market and other basic life needs. Our portfolio is growing with new assets that push upward mobility. We’re dedicated toserving farmers who are financially excluded and yet need access to assets on credit.
We are a socially driven business. We’re committed to our impact and the farming customers we serve, but we see the need for business opportunities in community development.
To date we’ve disbursed over 3,000 loans and are focused on reaching more than 1,000 new borrowers in 2018.
About the role:
As the Research and Designs Fellow, you will work to innovate, research, and design new product offerings for BAP to bring to market (read: you’ll be making a real dent in BAP’s future). An additional component of your work will be on our impact measurement and the systems that surround it. This role will be for 4-6 months and based in our Gulu Office, with a rolling start in either January or June.
Your responsibilities will include:
Monitoring and Evaluation (65%)
Streamline and organize existing and new data collection systems.
Work on impact assessments for bicycle users:
Analyze data that is currently being collected on financial standing.
Create special project evaluations for other indicators to be done on less routine basis (e.g. empowerment, healthcare access, etc.)
Possibly: design research to understand gender dynamics and how we can better improve in this area.
Develop new product customer social impact indicators.
Additionally test survey that tracks new product customers’ profitability and other indicators using the theory of change
Recruit, train, and oversee enumerators during implementation of surveys
Analyze survey results in SPSS or STATA or R
New market and product analysis (35%)
Pick up where previous market and product research left off by conducting:
Quantitative analysis of 2-3 new potential loan products for profitability, demand, and supply chain logistics (e.g. irrigation pumps, seeds, etc.).
Qualitative analysis with human centered design (HCD), including co-creation sessions for those products as well as other products currently in R&D
Who we are looking for
You have at least 6 months’ experience in research
You have lived abroad, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa
You have strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Excel and a statistical software package such at STATA or SPSS
You are extremely organized and detail-oriented
You possess at least a bachelor’s degree in related field
You have the cultural fit to work with the team at BAP if:

Other information
You will work out of our office in Gulu. Expect to spend about 40-50% of your time in the field. Fellows are compensated with a housing and living stipend.
This position will report directly to the CEO and Operations Director (depending on project).
